Day rehabilitation programs
A centre of excellence in day rehabilitation
Matilda Nepean offers a range of day rehabilitation programs in its state-of-the-art rehabilitation centre, which includes a spacious, well-appointed gym and hydrotherapy pool.
Day rehabilitation programs are suitable for anyone who doesn’t require inpatient hospital care, but requires ongoing rehabilitation treatment following a recent surgery, injury or illness.
The primary goal of the day rehabilitation program is to provide individualised treatment to assist in your recovery to full health and return to your daily activities.
Our experienced multidisciplinary team
All programs are developed and overseen by the hospital’s experienced multidisciplinary team. We maintain low patient-to-staff ratios across all rehabilitation programs to enable individualised attention and support.
Our multidisciplinary team consists of:
- specialist rehabilitation doctors
- exercise physiologists
- speech pathologists
- occupational therapists
- social workers
- rehabilitation nurses and wound care staff
Our multidisciplinary team will assess your needs, and work with you to develop meaningful goals whilst tailoring your program to your recovery requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does day rehabilitation involve?
An initial consultation with a rehabilitation specialist will be held to determine the most suitable program for your needs. Rehabilitation programs generally comprise 2 to 3 sessions per week. Each session lasts about 1.5 to 2 hours. You will have follow-up consultations with your rehabilitation doctor throughout your program.
Do I need a referral to access a rehabilitation program?
Yes, you will need a referral from your GP or specialist to access one of our programs. You will be assessed by our rehabilitation specialist once your referral has been processed.
How do I dress and what do I bring to a rehabilitation session?
It’s important for you to wear something that you feel comfortable exercising in. We suggest:
- comfortable clothes for exercise
- suitable covered footwear
- water bottle
- towel and swimming costume for hydrotherapy
What are the fees and charges for day rehabilitation?
Most patients with private health cover will have a no-gap payment, which means your health fund will cover 100% of the program.
Our team will be able to assist and advise what payments will be made by your health fund, and if there are any out-of-pocket expenses. For example, some health funds charge an excess or co-payment if you have not had any other hospital admissions in the current year.
Other options for payment include self-funding, Department Veterans’ Affairs, Comprehensive Third Party and Work Cover.
Do you provide assistance with transport?
If you’re not able to organise your own transport, we may be able to provide transport to and from the hospital – depending on your location – for a small cost. Our administration team will be pleased to assist with any transport requirements.
What are the hours of operation for the rehabilitation program?
Our day rehabilitation programs operate Monday to Friday between 8.00am-4.00pm.
What happens at the end of my rehabilitation program?
At the end of your rehabilitation program, Matilda Nepean provides the opportunity for day rehab participants to continue their exercise regime via our day wellness program, which is supervised independent exercise for one hour in either the gym or the hydrotherapy pool.
